If you were ready for a new reality show indulgence about rich and beautiful people living fabulously — and even if you weren’t — E! has your need filled with their breakout hit #RichKids of Beverly Hills. The love-hate relationship you’ll have with the five pampered 20-somethings on which the show revolves will keep bringing you back for more each week, whether you like it or not.
And that’s naught for the sneaky genius of the show’s executive producer, David Leepson, a man with six Emmy wins under his belt and nearly two decades of experience in producing high-speed programming, from sports to stunts. So how did a man of his distinguishment choose to “slum” it in the bubblegum pop world of E!, Bravo, etcetera? According to him, there’s much more to these “kids” (seriously, these are full-blown adults) than meets the eye.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, David warns viewers away from seeing the #RichKids as just a younger version of The Real Housewives franchise.
“They get compared to Housewives, but I think they are so much more,” he explains. “I think they are uniquely unfiltered. This is a core of friends, not just a group of people we put in a house and said go at it ... This cast has real history, real friendship.”
We don’t know if this EP’s ever seen Real Housewives, but doesn’t he know that RHONJ’s Teresa Giudice and Kathy Wakile go way back — they are blood, after all. And what about Kim Zolciak and NeNe Leakes? Sure, they had their ups and downs, but those ladies were friends for years before the show.
If you’re curious how David chose his #RichKids, he says it’s all about their social media influence. (FYI: The show is loosely-based on the wildly-popular Rich Kids of Instagram Tumblr.) “I watched raw footage of these ladies who use social media like nobody else — they are sort of Insta-famous stars online,” he details. “I called [the casting director] and said this is going to be an amazing show after we get in there and craft it together ... I think we may be one of the first TV shows to embrace social media in the fabric of the show.”
Okay, man, we’ll buy it. Whatever you’re doing, it’s working! We’re seriously addicted to this one.
