Robert Kirkman: If Daryl Dixon Were Gay, AMC Would Be Fine With It

The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) is such a loyal, likable, sexy piece of mancandy — it’s no wonder so many fans would love to see him hook up with X or Y. But what about Z? We adore the bromance between Daryl and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) but know there’s nothing overtly romantic in their lingering looks. But that doesn’t mean we really know as viewers whether Daryl is straight, gay or whatever.

Robert Kirkman writes the comic books, which do not feature Daryl at all so there’s nothing in the source material to give direction. In the “Letter Hacks” section of the new comic book Issue 130, a fan argued that you could draw parallels between Daryl and Paul “Jesus” Monroe, a cool character in the comics who hasn’t shown up on TV yet but happens to be gay. The fan asked RK if Daryl being gay had been considered. “All I can say is that it’s been discussed,” Robert answered. “We have very specific ideas about Daryl’s sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there’s ever a quiet period in the show where he’s not consistently distracted by crossbowing… we’ll tackle it in the show.” Maybe that quiet period will come up in the second half of Season 5, if they get out of Terminus and find an actual safe-ish place to stay. (Hint, hint.)

Robert was also asked if AMC would be OK with Daryl being gay, and he answered, “For the record, they absolutely would.” posted a story on the “What if Daryl were gay?” hypothetical discussion, and the three readers who’ve commented so far have said they'd be fine with it. Two female fans said they'd still love Daryl for who he is and the third fan said Daryl being gay "could actually be an interesting story. Given what we know of his life before the series, not sure how comfortable he would have been about it, which would explain why it simply never came up."

A few months ago on Reddit, RK shared a great explanation for why he had recently revealed Jesus to be gay: “In my opinion there should be more awesome gay people in fiction because there are plenty of awesome gay people in real life. I want Jesus to be a character where his sexuality is as unimportant as Rick or other heterosexual characters. So we won't focus on it constantly and it won't be the focus of any big storylines for him... but he'll make it with a dude every now and then... before going out and drop kicking zombies. He's one of my current favorite characters.”

Daryl is the favorite character of many TV viewers, and no matter what choice they make for his love life it’ll probably disappoint someone. But as long as Daryl stays the badass Daryl we know and love … does it really matter who he makes out with?

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
