Robert Kirkman Talks Testing AMC With The Walking Dead (VIDEO)

The Walking Dead may be a mega-hit now, but the successful sci-fi drama isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. In fact, both NBC and HBO famously passed on TWD before it found its current home on AMC, and in this Friday’s episode of The Writer’s Room TWD comic book creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman reveals that even after AMC gave them the green light, the creative team was still wary and testing boundaries with the network.

We excitedly told you about Robert’s Writer’s Room stint last week, and now we have a first look at his highly-anticipated appearance

“Our first episode at AMC opened with our main character, Rick Grimes, shooting a little girl in the head,” Robert says in the brief sneak peek clip of the Sundance TV show hosted by Community’s Jim Rash. He goes on to clarify that the young kid Rick shot was an “adorable zombie,” but clearly it was a big deal that AMC let them go there to begin with.

“I think a lot of that was done early on as a test,” Robert continued. “And then when they’re like, ‘Great! We’re on board,’ I know what kind of world we’re living in now and I know what storylines we can explore and we’re in a good place. We can actually do this.”

There’s no denying that AMC is the perfect home for TWD, we’re just getting a kick out of the fact that we’ve come so far in just a few years. Robert and his team may have been worried about Rick shooting a little walker girl in the pilot, but this past season Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) shot Lizzie Samuels (Brighton Sharbino) because she was “messed up.” Oh, and let’s not forget that Lizzie stabbed her own sister, Mika Samuels (Kyla Kenedy), to death.

Are you surprised by how far TWD has come? Check out the full video below and tell us what you think in the comments!

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
