Amber Riley Recalls “Rock Bottom” Days Before She Booked Glee

October 14’s episode of Dancing With The Stars asked that each celebrity contestant think back on the most memorable year of the lives... and then incorporate that story into their dance for the week.

Amber Riley chose 2009, the year she auditioned for and was rejected from American Idol, but then went on to book her role as Mercedes on Glee. At the time, Glee was a just a small little musical comedy pilot that nobody expected to get many viewers.

Then the show premiered, and it soon became a ratings hit. Amber, along with co-stars like Lea Michele (Rachel), Cory Monteith (Finn) and Dianna Agron (Quinn) were catapulted to instant success.

But it wasn’t an easy road getting there. Amber says she chose 2009 for her dance year because, "I want to show that just before you hit rock bottom, you keep going and push through it."

Just like with her perseverance in the days before Glee, Amber’s hard work for the night’s dance paid off! The 27-year-old’s Foxtrot — performed to the song “Try a Little Tenderness,” which she sang during Glee Season 1 — got a perfect “10” from judge Bruno Tonioli, and ended the night with an overall score of 26/30 points.
