Royal Baby Name: What Did Kate Middleton and Prince William Name the Baby Boy? (Updated)

UPDATE: Kate Middleton and Prince William have officially announced the name of their baby boy: It's George Alexander Louis! More details here.

As the exciting news broke that Kate Middleton has given birth to a baby boy, the chatter around what they will name the royal baby is hitting a fever pitch. British betting houses are setting odds on everything from the baby’s hair color to school and career choices — even which magazine will nab the exclusive baby photos.

But of course, the main focus is on what the couple will name the royal baby! Since the sex is out, the favorites have swapped out all female names to include some conventional male options. These are royals we’re talking about, so don’t expect them to name the baby North or Apple — or anything the least bit directional or fruit related!

Here are the names currently holding the best odds as Kate and William’s most likely choices:

Odds: 2-1

Why: Far and away the front-runner for a male heir, George is of course a very common name for the royal family — there have been six King Georges. But Prince Charles could put a wrench in this plan: There have been rumors that he will be referred to as George VII when he is crowned King, although Charles has denied it.

Odds: 4-1

Why: This timeless name is still one of the top 10 monikers in the UK, and to say it’s been a popular one for the royal family is an understatement. Two British kings have been named James, while Scotland has a leg up, with six. Does that mean Kate and William are more or less likely to choose it? We’re not sure. One little wrinkle: William’s Uncle Edward already named his son James.

Odds: 9-1

Why: This name stands firm in Greek history as the name of Alexander the Great, the iconic ruler who single-handedly created one of the largest empires in the world. That sounds like a great name for the little prince! ALso, this would be the male version of the Queen's middle name, Alexandra.

Odds: 10-1

Why: Yes, it’s a stretch, but Louis is also William’s middle name (his full name is William Arthur Philip Louis). He was named after Lord Louis Mountbatten, a “honorary grandfather” and mentor of Prince Charles, who was assassinated in Ireland in 1979.

Odds: 12-1

Why: Another of William and Charles’ middle names (these royals have so many monikers!), Arthur is also the middle name of King George VI. Plus, you may have also heard of a guy by the name of King Arthur, who ruled Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries.

Other possible boy names: Henry, Philip, Albert, David, Spencer
