Russell Wilson did what any loving husband would do and sent his wife a nice message for Mother's Day.

The internet, however, had other plans.

The 28-year-old NFL star married singer Ciara, 31, last July, and the couple welcomed their first child together in April of this year.

Russell is also helping raise his wife's 3-year-old son Future Zahir, whom she shares with rapper Future. But as far as online critics are concerned, Future is the boy's one and only dad.

Love Always Wins. #Family

"Nothing better than spending time with you," Russell captioned a photo of him and his wife on Instagram for the holiday. "You are an amazing mom & I'm so grateful I get to spend the rest of my life with you & raising our kids. I love you! #HappyMothersDay Weekend my love. @Ciara."

Seems innocent enough, but his use of the phrase "our kids" in referring to both his daughter and Future's son opened the floodgates for criticism.

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!!! #JoyToTheWorld

"Ummmmm 'our children' u are disrespectful dude! U have one child with Ciara.. Future is not yours ... are u crazy smh," one poster commented.

"You only have one child," another wrote, while someone else commented, "Umm excuse me @dangerusswilson you do know that Ciara's first born is NOT yours right? Future is his dad so don't be claiming another man's child like that. So not cool."

Eventually though, Russell's fans came to his defense, and the positive comments now seem to outnumber the negative ones, with many commenting on how special it is for a parent to accept a stepchild as their own.

"Don't pay any mind to the people who clearly do not understand what a parent truly is to a child," one insightful poster wrote. "Continue to show love to your children the way you do!"

Thankful.
