On April 7, Team Blake Shelton rocker Ryan Whyte Maloney and folk singer Kaleigh Glanton belted out a duet to “Easy” by Rascal Flatts and Natasha Bedingfield. Blake decided to pair the two artists together as they’re similar in their versatility and the two reviewed their previous battles and saw what they needed to work on — for Kaleigh that’s not being pitchy and for Ryan, it’s to work on his breath.

After deciding on a song, Ryan and Kaleigh met with Blake and mentor Chris Martin to rehearse. Chris told Ryan that he needed to connect more to the lyrics of the song and embody the emotion. Blake told Kaleigh that he was worried about her having pitch problems with her falsetto. Taking their coach’s notes into consideration, both Ryan and Kaleigh took the stage for a heartwarming performance of the country tune.

Usher told the singers that he felt the challenge they undertook with the bold choice of song, but he also felt the support they had for one another. He enjoyed Ryan’s lower register, but felt that Kaleigh was pretty withdrawn. Shakira thought that Kaleigh felt comfortable in her upper register, but thought that Ryan was pretty effortless overall. Adam felt the same way and while he noted Kaleigh’s massive improvements, he thought that Ryan had the better command of the song.

Coach Blake complimented the singers for their gusto to choose a song that was completely different from what they’re accustomed to. After pinpointing both of their strengths, Blake was left with the decision to send one of the singers to the playoffs. Based on consistency and growth, Blake chose to keep Ryan.
