Ryan Murphy to Be Honored With Genius Award at Critics’ Choice Television Awards
We’ve been appreciating Ryan Murphy’s brainchild, Glee, for more than five years now, but the showrunner is also the mastermind behind Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story. He’s had an illustrious career to say the least, and now he’s being honored for his work by one of the most respected television organizations in the world.
Per a press release, Ryan will be receiving the Critics’ Choice LOUIS XIII Genius Award at the Critics Choice Television Awards, which is scheduled to air live on The CW from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on June 19 at 8 p.m. ET. Like we said, we’re fully aware of Ryan’s immense talent and, at least as far as Glee is concerned, his desire to tell a story about underdogs so we’re happy that he’s being honored for all that he has done for television today.
The Broadcast Television Journalists Association calls Ryan “one of television’s most celebrated creators,” with BTJA President Joey Berlin adding his two cents as to why Ryan was selected. “From poignant reality-based movies to dark and twisted horror to musical theater, Ryan Murphy’s creativity knows no bounds,” he said. “It is a privilege to be able to recognize the incredible talent and breadth of work that he has developed for television viewers thus far in his career, and we look forward to seeing what lies ahead.”
Glee is coming to an end next year and even though that’s still hard for us to digest the news, we’ll admit we’re curious about what else Ryan has up his sleeve. We know he has the rights to Funny Girl and plans to bring it back to Broadway. Even though that production seems like it might be a few years out, we can only hope that Ryan will choose Lea Michele (Rachel) to play Fanny so they can be re-united in the post-Glee days.
So who knows? Maybe Ryan will even make a Funny Girl announcement as he accepts his Genius Award on June 19!
