He may be the host of American Idol — and a celeb in his own right — Ryan Seacrest will never be the American Idol. The guy just doesn't have the singing chops, as he proved on the show's Season 13 finale last night (May 21) when he performed on the show for the first time.
After "a lot of convincing," as Ryan's mom told Randy Jackson, Ryan sang a bit of Richard Marx's immortal '80s hit "Right Here Waiting" in front of the show's audience of more than 10 million viewers — joined by Mr. Marx himself on piano.
Unfortunately, as Randy would say, it was a little pitchy, dawg. Then again, the performance did bring the judges to their feet — with Keith Urban holding up a handwritten ticket to Hollywood.
We gotta forgive Ryan, though, as the moment was a sentimental one for the 39-year-old host — Richard Marx was the first recording artist Ryan saw in concert.
And lucky for us viewers, the finale also featured performance by the professionals — including Demi Lovato, Kiss, Paramore, and all three of the Idol judges — before contestant Caleb Johnson was crowned the big winner.
Hey, Ryan, you're a great host. Stick to that!
