Jersey Shore Creator SallyAnn Salsano Talks New Series The Ex and The Why — Exclusive

Throughout its sixth season, MTV’s Jersey Shore captured its fair share of couples breaking up and getting back together — with castmates Ronnie and Sammi making up a huge chunk of those splits. But in your own life, is it really a good idea to reconcile with an ex… there’s a reason you parted ways, after all.

That’s the question the aforementioned Shore creator SallyAnn Salsano aims to answer in her new MTV unscripted series, The Ex and The Why. Each episode, real people try to win back the loves of their lives — to varying degrees of success. Wetpaint Entertainment chatted with SallyAnn recently to find out why she decided to do the series, which celeb couples made things work after a split, and how she almost ended up on reality TV herself.

Wetpaint Entertainment: How did you come up with the concept of the show?

SallyAnn Salsano: I love shows that deal with the ‘what if’. I feel like everyone in their life needs closure and to be heard. This show gives people that chance.

Many dating shows treat exes like a negative thing (Real World: Ex-Plosion, The Bachelor). Do you think going back to an ex can be successful?

You know what, I think sometimes it's all about timing. Sometimes people make mistakes and people can change. That being said, just because you want to be with someone it doesn't mean they want to be with you.

Have a lot of TV projects in the works right now (Talk show The Real in September, CMT reality hit Party Down South Season 2 in June). How do you transition between such different shows?

It's like my real life, I'm all over the place. I would be bored doing just one.

Can you think of some examples of celebrity couples who have made things work after a split?

Off the top of my head: Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones; Pink and Carey Hart; and Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen.

We read that you were a finalist for one of the seasons of Real World. How do you think your life would have changed if you'd been on reality TV yourself?

I'd still be doing The Challenge.

Does this change how you approach the shows you produce?

Yes, I respect the casting process and realize how much work and thought people put into trying to be a part of a show.

The Ex and The Why airs every Monday through Thursday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.
