Orange Is The New Black’s Samira Wiley Promoted to Series Regular

Great news, Orange Is the New Black fans! Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey Washington on the Netflix series, has been promoted from featured star to series regular for Season 3, according to Deadline.

Those of us who’ve already binged our way through all 13 episodes of Season 2 can attest that Samira was a central figure in this year’s run, delivering one of the season’s standout performances. If you haven’t yet made your way through, you may want to stop reading now.

Season 2 gave us a little backstory on Poussey, who grew up as an Army brat. Not only did that flashback provide fans with the knowledge that the hilarious inmate is fluent in German and looks amazing with a mohawk, it also gave a glimpse into an experience that might have played a large part in her developing such a tough exterior.

Though her role was often that of comic relief in Season 1, this most recent series saw Poussey facing some pretty heavy and upsetting circumstances, thanks to the destructive force that was Vee (Lorraine Toussaint). The drug kingpin and mother figure to Poussey’s BFF and unrequited crush, Taystsee (Danielle Brooks) made our poor girl’s life beyond miserable for much of the season.

We hope next year’s rub will deliver more peeks into Poussey’s psyche, as well as more of those awesome exchanges between “Mackenzie” and “Amanda” we’ve come to adore.
