We're still trying to cope with the prospect of Grey Sloan Memorial without Cristina Yang and Grey's Anatomy without Sandra Oh after yesterday's big news. And so is Sandra, by the sound of it.
"Letting go of such a huge part of my life … I want to cry right now," she tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Grey's has been the most important role of my life … Learning the rare opportunity of what it is to work on one project for 10 years — that's like being married in television years for like a thousand years."
Her exit isn't for another 24 episodes, granted, but Sandra is already thinking about the end of the season and wants on the happiest of endings for Cristina.
"I want this to be a celebration," she says. "I want us to get to that point where we see this character ride off into the sunset … Playing Cristina and growing her and growing myself in her, I want to usher her into the next section of her life in the best way possible. It's got to be Cristina Yang's happily-ever-after."
But don't think that the end of Season 10 will necessarily be the last you'll see of Cristina. Should her character live on, Sandra definitely wants to be back for the series finale, whenever that should be. "There's no way that no one could keep me away from that," she says.
And in the meantime? "I'm just going to focus on every single day. I just can't think about [leaving] right now."
She also reveals that she'll probably steal Cristina's stethoscope and ID badges from the set as mementos. And then she'll relish in reliving all the (fictional) drama of her greatest role.
"I feel like, in 10 or 20 years, when I'm lounging around in my muumuu with a martini, I'm going to watch Grey's Anatomy from the pilot to whenever it ends, and I'm going to enjoy myself thoroughly and enjoy seeing all those moments and being able to see it with a new perspective."
We're onboard for any and all martini-muumuu parties, Sandra!
