Sara Ramirez has retired (for now) from Grey's Anatomy, but she has kept herself plenty busy these past few months — and not just with a big buzzcut!

The 41-year-old actress is currently hyping her PBS special, TED Talks: Education Revolution, which she hosted live with Baratunde Thurston in NYC in November. (We chatted with her at the time, and she’s as radiant as you would expect!)

Click through the slideshow above to see what Sara told Parade about hosting TED, to learn why she thinks leaving Grey’s was “the best choice” she ever made, and to see photos from her transformative summer… that haircut included!

TED Talks: Education Revolution debuts tonight, September 13, on PBS. Check local listings for exact airtimes.

“The way [TED Talks: Education Revolution] was presented to me was that it was a focus on how education is changing to adapt to our new digital world, which, I think, is really important.”

“As a person of mixed race, a Mexican-Irish-American immigrant, a female of color, I definitely was curious to see what the lineup was going to be knowing that 60 percent of Latino and black students drop out of high school.”

“I’m aware of how distractions can really prevent you from learning, from really investing in your education especially if you don’t feel valued, if you don’t feel seen, if you feel neglected on some level.”

“I come from a family of teachers and scientists, and so … I was exposed to education and environments where learning was a priority, but I was also very curious about the fact that this particular show was also going to shine a light on how education is changing.”

“[Leaving Grey’s Anatomy] was a very conscious decision, a choice that I made, and it was really supported by my colleagues and my boss, and so for me, it’s the best choice I ever made.”

“When you’re really clear about the decisions you’re making and why you’re making them, it’s actually rather empowering, and I continue to wish [the Grey’s team] all well and they know it, so it’s a good thing.”
