We're used to the ups and downs in the love lives of Shondaland's fictitious characters, but Grey's Anatomy star Sarah Drew (April Kepner) has had her own share of relationship woes , which she bravely reveals in a candid interview with Glamour.
The 33-year-old makes the startling confession when the magazine asks if she has ever made a risk like Jackson (Jesse Williams) did at April's wedding. (FYI, Sarah has been married to UCLA college lecturer Peter Lanfer since 2012.)
"Here's a big risk: Staying with my husband during the blackest time in our marriage," Sarah begins. "Several years into our marriage, I wanted to walk away, and I didn't. My dad said that even if it feels hopeless, it doesn't mean that it is hopeless. And then my dad was like, 'Also, go to counseling tomorrow.' My parents found someone for us to go see.
Sarah does qualify that no one was necessarily to blame for their disconnect: "It wasn't actually anything that either of us had done, and it wasn't a moment of betrayal. It wasn't anything like that. It was just being in a relationship, not knowing how to communicate and how to have a partner.
"So I'm feeling unloved, and he's feeling unloved, and it's just sad," she continues. "Counseling was amazing, but I didn't know how loved I was until after my marriage had gone through its darkest time. I remember him looking at me one morning and saying, 'I love you,' and I believed him for the first time. To think, 'I am this man's favorite person on the planet,' there was something about that moment that I had never touched or tasted or felt before that."
Sounds like a love story we'd see depicted on TV — but we're just glad that, unlike so many of the romances on Grey's, this one sounds like a happily-ever-after!
