Grey’s Anatomy Star Sarah Drew Dishes about Mom’s Night Out and Parenting

It’s hard to imagine Sarah Drew as anyone but wide-eyed and innocent April Kepner on Grey’s Anatomy, but in real life, she’s not running an ER — she’s simply the mom of a 17-month-old son named Micah. While acting is both her passion and her career, her free time is spent with her husband, Peter Lanfer, and their little guy, and while filming family comedy Mom’s Night Out with Lord of the Rings’ Sean Astin in Birmingham, Alabama, she brought everyone along!

During a chat with All Alabama on set, she didn’t talk directly about her personal life, but she did spill about how the new movie overlaps with her life. As the daughter of a pastor, Rev. Charles Drew, she grew up with strong faith, much like her Grey’s character, April. And while she doesn’t see her new movie as a Christian film, she does appreciate that her on-screen family’s mentality is familiar to her.

"I don't look at this as a Christian film," she explained. "I look as this as a family comedy. The lead characters happen to be Christians, happen to have this faith background, which I think is really refreshing. We don't have to explain why they are who they are, they just are.”

She also noted that it’s just a “given” that they treat each other a certain way and go to church on Sunday, and that regardless of characters’ faith, this family comedy genres is making a comeback.

"I do think Hollywood is recognizing that there's a craving for it, that there's a huge audience in our country," she said. "They want movies that they can bring their families to. They want movies that are going to speak to their heart, in a way that's refreshing to their hearts. And Hollywood is learning that there's money to be made there … and higher quality, which is exciting to see.”

Though she’s headed back to Grey’s in a few short weeks, during her next hiatus, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her in another family film. Sounds like this is her new passion — though hooking up with Jackson Avery and saving lives isn’t a bad day job!
