Shonda Rhimes, the creator, head writer, and executive producer of Grey's Anatomy, is a madwoman — and we mean that in the best way possible. Her creativity seems to be endless, and her latest television show, Scandal, just proves that statement in every way.
When does Scandal air? You can catch Scandal on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
What is Scandal about? Scandal stars Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, a former member of a presidential campaign who is widely considered to be the best "fixer" in Washington, D.C. She has a reputation for "wearing the white hat" and she runs a crisis management firm composed of staff members whose lives she has fixed in the past.
As its name suggests, Scandal is full of crazy twists and turns — and, well, scandals — all of which center around Olivia and her employees while intertwining with the cutthroat political and journalistic landscapes Washington, D.C. is notorious for. Oh, and did we mention the covert government agency B-613 yet? Yeah, there's a lot going on in Scandal's world.
Much of the show's first two seasons focused on Olivia's relationship and affair with president Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn), further exploring the entwined worlds of public image and political power on Capitol Hill. Of course, Olivia and Fitz's relationship is complicated by the President's tumultuous marriage to his shrewd, calculating wife Mellie, played by Bellamy Young. Scandal's third season picked up right where season two left off, with even more crazy twists and turns in every episode.
The show is full of blink-and-you'll-miss-it action, and its crazy plot twists can cause mental whiplash, so we've prepped a nice introductory lesson for interested viewers via GIFs. The writing is over-the-top (in a good way!), and the plot is compelling and addictive, but ultimately the show is a vessel for showing off the incredible — and incredibly complex — character that is Olivia Pope.
Big news! What does Kerry Washington's real-life pregnancy mean for the show?
Who are the stars of Scandal? Rounding out the so-called "Gladiators" of Olivia's firm, Olivia Pope and Associates, are: Harrison Wright (played by Columbus Short), a lawyer who dodged significant jail time for insider training thanks to Olivia taking his case pro bono; Abby Whelan (Darby Stanchfield), an investigator whose life was put back together by Olivia after her ex-husband beat her in a drunken rage; Huck (Guillermo Diaz), a former C.I.A. agent and tech savant Olivia befriended while he was homeless; and Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes), a budding lawyer with a dark and secret past.
The other series regulars are Tony Goldwin and Bellamy Young as the president and first lady, Fitzgerald and Mellie Grant; Jeff Perry as the deliciously devious Cyrus Beene, Fitz's Chief of Staff; Joshua Malina as U.S. Attorney David Rosen; and Scott Foley as Jake Ballard, B-613 operative, friend of president Fitz, and off and on lover of Olivia.
