Scandal Emmy Nominations: Dan Bucatinsky Hopes for Historic Win

Yesterday was a good day in Shondaland. While Grey's Anatomy failed to to earn any Emmy love, Scandal picked up two major nominations: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for star Kerry Washington, and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Dan Bucatinsky (who also happens to be a writer and consulting producer for Grey's). How do the stars feel about the big news?

Dan Bucatinsky spoke to E! online about his own nomination, and why Kerry Washington's is so special.

It turns out Dan woke up and figured he didn't get a nom, since no one had called him about it. He found out the truth the newfangled way — Twitter! "I saw my Twitter feed exploded and then I woke up my husband and I said, 'This is not confirmed, but I think I may have been nominated for an Emmy,'" he explained. Well, that's certainly one way to get good news!

Those of you who are still grumbling because Dan's on-screen hubby, Jeff Perry (Cyrus Beene) didn't get a nod in his category should be pleased to hear that Jeff was Dan's first call. According to Dan, he said something like, "Dude, you're my first call. I owe everything to you."

Dan also gushed about his excitement over Kerry Washington's nom, saying that he really thinks "she has a shot at winning ... it's a groundbreaking role and there's never been an African-American in a drama series who's ever won…I just feel like it's high time we make history this year, not only with gay marriage, but with portrayals of this kind of woman on national television because it's important."

TV with a message: That's Shonda Rhimes' way, and we'd love to see Scandal make headlines with Kerry's win. Even her nomination is a triumph — she's the first African American actress since 1995 to get an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nomination.
