We would watch Scandal if it was on every night, at all hours. Granted, our hearts probably couldn’t take the stress of that much intrigue, murder, and love triangle-ness, but still. And we’re not alone in our love of the Kerry Washington-led ABC show. The dramatic episode, “YOLO” achieved a new high in ratings, knocking NBC’s The Blacklist off its pedestal.

TV by the Numbers has the breakdown of the December 5 primetime winners, with Scandal grabbing a 3.1 rating/8 share in the coveted 18-49-year-old demo, with 8.6 million viewers tuning in to watch Liv’s mom, Maya return and then be revealed as a secret sleeper villain. The huge numbers were a six-week high for the drama in its third season, boosting the audience by 7% over the episode that aired the week before Thanksgiving.

With such a strong showing, Scandal is up 16% in viewers over the same time last year, and is up 57% overall from where they were at this time. As long as the show continues its strong showing, it seems inevitable that ABC will give it the go ahead sooner than later for Season 4.

The Blacklist, NBC’s newest darling, saw its Season 1 midseason finale, “Anslo Garrick Part 2,” bring in more viewers (over 12.2 million), but a lower share of the target demographic than Scandal. What does that mean exactly? Well, advertisers care most about that demo (18-49) because that’s who buys their products, so shows that continue to hit the mark are the ones that networks will continue to renew and support. In short: More viewers in that demo means more Scandal for years to come.

Did you tune in to watch Scandal on December 5? Will you be watching next week for the winter finale?
