Scott Gimple on The Walking Dead’s First Two Showrunners: “I Try to Take the Best of Both of Them”

Why was Scott Gimple The Walking Dead’s third showrunner in four years?

Larry King recently sat down with Scott to discuss the past and future of the series, and Larry bluntly asked Season 4’s king why they had so much turnover. "I think it's a difficult show,” Scott said. “I think it was based on just places where my former bosses were, and they've both moved on to really cool things."

As fans know, the first two showrunners — Frank Darabont and Glen Mazzara — did not leave with smiles on their faces. Frank was ousted during Season 2 filming, and Glen was let go after Season 3, but Scott is now on board into Season 5.

Is there something specific that Frank or Glen brought to the AMC show that Scott now uses himself? "You know, I it's funny,” Scott said. “I think my style is kind of an amalgamation of the greatest hits that we've done. There's things that Frank did that are just indelible in the show. There's influences that Glen had that absolutely remain to this day. I try to take the best of both of them, I worked under both of them, and just try to keep it going.”

It’s never fun to be usurped, but it’s also potentially awkward to be the usurper, especially if you have personal respect for your predecessors. Scott seems to have handled the transition with grace.

Comic book writer/TV executive producer Robert Kirkman got pretty candid on the showrunner changes in his recent Reddit AMA, listing positive attributes for all three guys. He called Scott “an absolute rock star,” viewing Season 4 as “by far our strongest season,” and adding that they’ll keep him going forward.

Are you happy with the direction of the show now, or do you still miss Frank and/or Glen?
