Glee Season 1 Flashback: Rachel and Kurt’s First Diva-Off — “Defying Gravity” (VIDEO)

Oh, Glee. The genre-defying, boundary-breaking, fangirl-inspiring show has had its ups and downs over the years. Despite its flaws, we still love it — we always will — but sometimes it's nice to think back on the delightful early days of Season 1, when it was all fresh and new and practically perfect, and each new musical moment seemed more inspiring than the last. So, for Flashback Friday, we decided to bring you one of our favorite Season 1 musical memories: Rachel and Kurt's first diva-off to Wicked’s standout number, "Defying Gravity."

If you've somehow forgotten (how?!), this epic sing-off happened in Season 1, Episode 9: "Wheels." It was the first "Diva-Off" of the series, and it kicked the tradition off right, with Kurt battling to be allowed to sing the solo at Sectionals even though the song is written for a woman.

Both singers give the song their all — up until the hard-to-hit High F at the end, which Kurt misses (intentionally, because he wants to make things easier for his dad, who was already receiving anti-gay calls over Kurt's sexuailty). Rachel sings it out with ease, earning her the solo, and making our hearts soar with the beauty of her voice.

Relive the unforgettable battle it here:
