Orange Is the New Black Season 1 Recap: Where We Left Off

Orange Is the New Black Season 2 drops on June 6, 2014. If you ask us, that still leaves you plenty of time to rewatch, oh, the entire first season. We mean, who needs a life, right?

For those of you unwilling to devote the next week to revisiting Litchfield but would like a refresher on where everyone left off at the end of Season 1 — don't worry, that's what we're here for. While we can't touch on every single character, we've got a rundown of all the biggest plotlines right here so you can feel prepped and ready to binge Season 2.

Piper Chapman: Love Triangles and a Brutal Beating

Over the course of the first season, protagonist Piper Chapman (Tyler Schilling) learned the hard way that just keeping her head down and doing her time wasn't going to be so easy.

One major source of angst for Piper is her romantic entanglements. Out in the real world there's Larry (Jason Biggs), Piper's fiancé. Inside there's Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), the one-time lover who got Piper involved in a drug ring years ago and then later ratted her out in a plea deal.

For a brief period Piper tried to juggle her engagement and a reignited affair with Alex, but by the end of the season both relationships were down the drain. Larry found out about Alex, but said he'd be willing to forgive Piper if she'd marry him ASAP. She agreed and cut things off with Alex, who found comfort with the delightful Nicky. However, once Larry discovered that Piper was the one who'd re-initiated things with Alex — that it wasn't the seduction he'd imagined — she found herself without either partner.

At the very end of the season, Piper found a way to vent her anger — by beating up her biggest enemy, Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning), a murderous meth addict who had made it her mission to bring Piper down. While it was hard not to applaud someone taking Pennsatucky down, the brutal beating Piper dished out will inevitably land her in big trouble.

Daya (Dascha Polanco) and prison guard Bennett (Matt McGorry) fell in love, which was all well and good until she got pregnant and decided to keep the baby. This put them in a sticky situation, because Bennett could lose his job and even go to jail for sleeping with Daya.

The solution that Daya comes up with, at Red's prompting, is to sleep with Pornstache (Pablo Schreiber). Except that backfired, both because he didn't actually get fired, and because he's convinced he and Daya are in love. Whomp whomp.

Who Will Run the Kitchen?

In non-relationship news, there's currently a war over the kitchen. Red (Kate Mulgrew) spent most of the season in a battle with Pornstache, who wanted her to help him smuggle in drugs; despite smuggling in other things on a regular basis, she refused (she hates drugs). After Red's plan to get her foe fired — see above with Daya — backfired, he managed to get her ousted from her beloved (and profitable) job as head of the kitchen.

Currently, Gloria (Selenis Leyva) has taken over as chef, and has brought in her own crew to help, but Red is determined to get back to the top. Unfortunately, her first attempt to discredit Gloria by starting a oven fire backfired; one of her own people was injured, causing hurt feelings all around and shaking what power she had left.

There's drama amongst the prison power players, too. Most important to know is that all season we heard about how the prison is struggling, financially. Except it turns out that Lichfield recently had a budget — prison administrator Natalie "Fig" Figueroa (Alysia Reiner) has been embezzling it. This might end up coming to light, because a reporter caught wind of the discrepancy after Larry had a radio show about his life with Piper in prison.

Of course, there are plenty of other important and beloved characters out there. Let's do a quick rundown of some of the other standouts:

  • Piper’s roommate Miss Claudette (Michelle Hurst) failed to win her appeal, so she snapped and attacked a guard. She was sent down to the max security prison, and we have no idea if we'll see her again.

  • Transgender inmate Sophia Burset (Laverne Cox) has finally given her wife permission to move on with another man, a big and difficult step.

  • Taystee Jefferson (Danielle Brooks). After finally being let out, Taystee intentionally committed a crime to get back in because life was even worse for her on the outside.
