In the backdoor pilot for The Originals, it was Elijah who convinced Klaus to fight for the life of his unborn child, effectively saving Hayley’s life in the process. Will things stay all family business between Elijah and Hayley, or is there romance in their future? Phoebe stayed relatively tight-lipped about the prospect, but did say that because Elijah is “the most loyal and human” of the Originals, he “feels an instant connection and protectiveness of Hayley.”
“[Elijah] wants his family and he’s very protective of family and, unfortunately, the family he has doesn’t appreciate how protective and fiercely loyal he is to them,” Phoebe said. “And I think he sees Hayley and this child as an opportunity to, you know, bring some of these siblings together.” So, for now, it seems like Hayley is just a means to a family reunion end, but we’re not ruling out romance altogether — especially considering there’s apparently a moment in the pilot when Elijah gives Hayley his coat. Swoon.
Hayley and Klaus
Those hoping for Hayley and Klaus will continue the one-night stand that put them in this precarious situation (i.e. blackmailed by the witches of New Orleans) will have to keep hoping. It doesn’t sound like these two are becoming fast friends, considering Phoebe told TV Fanatic that Klaus was her main antagonist in the beginning of Season 1.
“[Hayley] sees the relationship that Klaus has with his own sister [Rebekah] let alone some girl that he’s knocked up,” said Phoebe. “I think she’s kind of thinking, ‘I don’t know if I’m even safe, or if this child is safe.” These are probably good instinct, Hayley. But it’s not all doom and gloom! According to Phoebe, though it seems Hayley and Klaus will continue “resenting each other,” they are also “growing to protect each other.” Aww.
Though Phoebe said Hayley hasn’t gotten any of her own flashbacks so far, she’s eager to explore Hayley’s history in The Originals — and thinks it will give context to many of the questionable moves she made on TVD: “[Hayley] had a really troubled childhood and went through a lot that really led her to make certain decisions that she’s made — especially recently in what was shown on TVD. So, I think exploring her history and her childhood is really going to make some of the things that she did make a little more sense.”
As for whether or not Hayley will be a good mother? Phoebe says she hopes Hayley will be a good mom, but it seems like it will be a tough transition from Hayley’s mostly solo existence to a proud parent: “Hayley has gone through her life acting quite selfishly because she never felt like there was anything else besides her at stake,” said Phoebe. “She never had brothers or sisters or family that she had to think about. She was just thinking about herself and she was almost on a kamikaze mission through life because, if something happened to her, it was just her. Whereas now she’s looking after an infant as well, so she has to think about other people besides herself.”
