The Originals Season 1: Why Hayley and Elijah Would Work As a Couple

Now that we have a whole new The Vampire Diaries-inspired television show in The Originals, we can expect tons of new romantic pairings, right? One potential coupling that has popped onto our love radar is Elijah (Daniel Gillies)/Haley (Phoebe Tonkin). Here are seven reasons why we think the vampire and werewolf would totally work.

He saved her life

In the backdoor pilot for The Originals, Elijah totally saves Hayley’s life by convincing Klaus to, you know, give a damn about his unborn child. This is good for Hayley, as the witches of New Orleans have vowed to kill pregnant Hayley if Klaus doesn’t help them take down Marcel. Elijah argues that he is doing this to help Klaus on a path to redemption, but there has to be a small part of him that wants to save Hayley, too. Well, maybe not yet, but we suspect there will be.

They’re both coming off bad relationships

For Elijah, it was the manipulation-heavy affair with Katherine. For Hayley, it was either the one-night stand with Klaus or the unrequited pining after Tyler. Either way, these two have had recent bad luck in love over which they can commiserate and, perhaps, find common ground.

She’s like family

Elijah is all about family as in, it’s his number one motivation in life. He gave up on his relationship with Katherine to come to New Orleans to try to bring his family back together (the fact that Katherine is a manipulative bitch could have factored into that decision, as well). Hayley is like family to the Mikaelson’s now, and that has to mean something to Elijah. We’re not saying it should prompt Elijah to fall in love with her, but it will definitely give him reason to get to know her...and then fall in love with her.

She needs a friend

OK, so far, our list has been mostly about why this relationship would work for Elijah, but it takes two to tango. We love Hayley’s feisty independence, but the woman is friendless and pregnant in a strange city. She could do with a friend you know, the kind that doesn’t use her as a pawn in some witchy agenda to gain freedom (we understand where the witches are coming from, but keeping an unborn child as a hostage: harsh). Hayley needs to trust someone, and we can’t think of a better option than Elijah. Not only is her powerful, but he’s fair. First step: become tentative allies. Second step: inadvertently fall in love. We love romantic drama!

They look great together

Check out this promo pic from Season 1, Episode 2 and tell us these two don’t have some seriously beautiful chemistry brewing. It’s a pretty simple equation, but one gorgeous person plus another gorgeous person equal one beautiful couple. That’s just math.

Opposites attract

He’s an even-keeled vampire. She’s a hot-tempered werewolf. These two couldn’t be less alike… but we kind of dig that. On TVD, we never would have thought to put these two together, but now that they are in completely different circumstances on The Originals, we think the setting is right for an opposites attract romance.

The actors are from the same part of the world

OK, this is kind of cheating because it doesn’t really have anything to do with the characters, but we love that both Phoebe Tonkin and Daniel Gillies are from the same corner of the globe. Phoebe is Australian and, though Daniel was born in Canada, he grew up and started his acting career in New Zealand. Kismet!

Do you think Hayley and Elijah would make a good couple? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
