Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) eloped on Grey's Anatomy — running away from their lives and their respective significant others — and now the mother of the groom is finally getting a chance to congratulate the newlyweds.
Did we say "congratulate"? We meant "berate."
At the start of this sneak peek from Season 10, Episode 16 — "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place," airing Thursday, March 20 — Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen) glares across the conference room table at her son while April nervously tries to break the tension, stammering on about how she can relate to Catherine's surprise.
Jackson interrupts: "You know what, babe? Don't. She doesn't care. But I know why you're here, Mom, and I could have saved you the trip."
He tells his mom that he already called the Avery Foundation's attorney. "He protects our financial interests," Catherine explains to April.
"Are you suggesting that I'm after your money?" April responds, aghast.
Jackson scolds his mom for questioning his bride's character.
"You wanna talk about her character?" Catherine hisses. "She left a man at the altar. She broke his heart. Humiliated him in front of everyone that he loves. I have no idea what she's capable of, never mind you."
(That's a fair point, we gotta say.)
She tells April that she signed a prenup when she married into the Avery family, and Jackson tells his mother that she's being inappropriate.
"What's inappropriate is that the engagement was 15 minutes at a rest stop on a turnpike," Catherine retorts, pushing a document across the table. "Fortunately, postnuptial agreements were created for moments like this."
And it's right about then that Jackson storms out, leaving April alone with her new mother-in-law.
Did we say "mother-in-law"? We meant "monster-in-law." Get on #TeamJapril already, lady!
