Ready for some drama? This week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy (Season 10, Episode 16: “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”) was pretty much one major conflict after the other… and left us feeling really lucky that Catherine Avery is not our mother-in-law.
Missed the episode? Here’s what you need to know:
Best. Surgery. Ever. That’s what everyone in the hospital is buzzing about, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. So what’s going on? A patient who came in with severe stomach pains had actually absorbed a twin fetus… which apparently never happens. Richard’s feeling a little bummed about his birthday — especially since the hospital’s encouraging him to retire — but the really awesome surgery totally makes it better.
Catherine Avery is in the house! Aaaaand she couldn’t be less thrilled that Jackson and April are married. Can you blame her? She’s a mom who missed her son’s wedding! But, you know, she totally takes the “April must be a gold digger, did you guys even think this through?” angle instead. April totally sees right through her, though, and smooths things over in the end. We think this Japril marriage is going to work out after all.
But, um, they have a lot to talk about, considering the fact that they can’t seem to agree on anything about their future at all. Oops.
Cristina is suddenly obsessed with finding a match for Owen. Even if it takes a little online dating. Even if he’s not interested in anyone but Cristina.
Callie gets serious about Derek trying to steal her sensors. Can you blame her? She started using them to help people regain the ability to walk and suddenly because the president called, Derek’s going to put the kibosh on the whole operation? Nope. Callie’s not having it, and she even calls in a lawyer. After a very heated argument, Derek finally realizes that Callie’s right, and threatens to leave the president’s project if they don’t share the sensors. Win!
Alex spends the entire episode chasing Jo down to sign their relationship contract and Jo’s not having it. Why not? Every time someone signs something, the whole thing goes up in flames. DNRs, marriage licenses… as far as Jo’s concerned, that stuff never ends well. But Alex eventually manages to convince her, which means these two can continue legally making us puke from their adorableness.
And the rest of the episode? One big bear hug as the entire hospital shows up for a surprise party for Richard, and Owen offers up one last birthday present for him: He wants to appoint him the director of the residency program, not retire. Surprise!
