Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Season 10, Episode 5—”I Bet It Stung”
On this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith and Derek are back to work, and between the two of them and Callie, they’ve got the morning thing down.
And now that Mer’s back in action, she steals a heart/liver surgery from Bailey — hey, she deserves it. It’s been a long time. Despite the fact that Bailey insists her namesake is “drinking the milk of a liver stealer.”
Arizona and April are still recovering from their drunken night at the fundraising gala. But it’s okay, because Leah’s here with coffee — and a little flirting — for AZ. Wait, did Arizona sleep with Leah after the party? She can’t remember. Uh oh.
Jackson’s planning on introducing Stephanie to his mom, who’s at the hospital visiting Richard. Who is barely moving around, but at least he’s not rejecting food and breathing treatments like last episode. Katherine wants to offer her help, and instead she walks in on Jackson and Stephanie doing what people do in the on-call room. Of course.
Jo’s working with Alex’s dad — and Alex is really not up for talking about it. But he and Jo have a pretty good repertoire going, and she thinks she’s might be able to get him into rehab instead of back out doing the drugs that put him in the hospital in the first place. Alex would rather her just discharge him, but Jo’s obviously got other ideas.
Mer’s struggling with balancing mommyhood and surgeon life — she’s going to miss out on a tea party she promised Zola after work, and she’s gotta breastfeed when Cristina wants her in surgery. Luckily, Bailey’s on hand to help her prep for the liver surgery. How sweet that they’re bonding over being moms!
But Zola fell down on the playground and cut her head open, and Meredith’s gotta go, leaving Bailey to tell Cristina she’ll just meet her in the OR. But when their patient goes into heart failure, they’ve gotta do emergency surgery, and Meredith, busy proving she’s not her mother, misses out.
Jo managed to get Alex’s dad 28 days in a rehab center for free, but he’s not up for it. He can’t understand why she’s doing this for him and insists he never agreed. Because you can’t make promises and later disappoint people when you can’t make them happen, right? And that’s how he lost his children, he says — namely, Alex.
Meanwhile, Callie and Owen, bonding over their recent break-ups, are dealing with a daredevil of a patient whose sister was born just to offer her replacement bone marrow and blood, a la My Sister’s Keeper. This time, it’s a kidney she needs. Her sister offers it to her, but Callie reminds her she can say no. She ends up inspiring both of them to stand up and do what they want instead of what’s expected for them — Callie, to dance in her underwear without Arizona, and the patient’s sister to no longer be used as spare parts and live her own life.
Meredith runs into the OR to find that she’s too late. Cristina’s not convinced that Meredith’s not ready to balance being a mother and a surgeon, and lets Bailey scrub in in her place. Later, she confronts Cristina, who tells her she was unprepared… and flat out says that Meredith is not as talented or competent a surgeon as she is — how could she be while being a mom at the same time? Meredith is understandably mad. “We’re in different places now,” says Cristina, “and that’s okay.” Ouch.
Alex ends up in an elevator with his dad, who’s got no idea Alex is his son. Will these two ever interact?
After hearing that her patient’s sister donated her kidney after all, she confronts Arizona at Joe’s and tells her she will be needing her place back because she’s tired of taking care of other people who treat her poorly.
It’s fine, though, because Leah offers her place to Arizona. So what did happen with them after the gala? Not what Arizona thought — Leah found her passed out in the hallway and the two of them spent the night eating grilled cheese and watching Derek’s old surgeries. So yeah, no hook-up.
And Stephanie’s finally got her big chance to redeem herself with Katherine, and she confronts her at the bar, too. When Jackson arrives, Katherine invites her to stay and offers to buy. This might work out okay for them, after all.
Meredith and Derek? Not doing so hot, though. Parenthood and surgeon-hood might not agree with these two as much as they originally thought.
And after putting Sofia to bed, Callie finally gets to dance in her underwear again.
