Grey’s Anatomy Season 10 Speculation: Could Meredith and Derek Leave Forever?

The latest spoiler about Grey's Anatomy Season 10 is a major doozy for fans of the show's central couple — apparently Meredith and Derek are going to be taking some time off from Grey Sloan Memorial hospital. Yes, you read that right: On this show about doctors, two of the main characters are going to put a pin in their doctoring.

Why? The answer should be obvious. With Zola and baby Bailey to take care of, the superstar docs take a leave of absence so they can focus on parenting. Here's our question: Could this arc be setting up MerDer leaving the hospital for good? It's a terrible thought, but we can't stop ourselves from wondering.

Let's look at why we're worried — and also why we're pretty sure it will all be OK in the end.

Reasons for concern. The biggest reason fans might be worried that this plotline foreshadows the end of MerDer's time at the hospital is external to the story. Season 10 marks the end of the original actors' contracts, and fans are worried that big names like Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo want out. After all, we already know Sandra Oh is jumping ship at the end of the year, so they might too.

Reasons not to worry. That said, if this plotline was really about finding a way to potentially write MerDer out, we're pretty sure it would happen later in the season. According to Patrick Dempsey, both characters are going to struggle with being stay at home parents, so our guess is this story will end with them both back in the ER, doing what they do best — saving lives!

What do you think: Is this plotline cause for concern, or will it all work out in the end?
