Grey’s Anatomy’s April Kepner has gotten herself into a few messes throughout the years, and two of her biggest happened when she failed the boards. After failing, she was fired, worked on her family’s farm, then was re-hired. From there, she tried to work out a relationship with Jackson, had a pregnancy scare, broke things off with him, and later got engaged to now-fiancé Matthew... and then proclaimed her love for Jackson. Needless to say, a complicated Season 10 is ahead for Dr. Kepner.
When Wetpaint Entertainment caught with portrayer Sarah Drew at the TCA All-Star party recently, she revealed what’s next for April — including retaking her boards, her ongoing love triangle, and yet another relationship that will be unfolding this season. Read on for our full chat, then hit the comments with what you want to see for her this season.
Wetpaint Entertainment: April is retaking her boards this season. What is different now than the last time she took them?
Sarah Drew: She's not distracted in the same way, I guess. I mean…
Well, she is still distracted...
She is. She is. She's distracted now, but I think she never expected to fail because she's not someone who has ever really failed at anything. I think that that was a wake up call for her to get her act together and really focus on her task at hand. I think that's what's going to be the difference.
Love wise, do you have any hopes and wishes?
I want her to figure out what she wants, and I want her to take guilt out of the picture. But yeah, I want to see her kind of come into her own and make a choice.
Does she know who she is at this point?
No. She still has a lot of growing up to do, but don't we all. I mean, there are ways that we know ourselves, but then we continue to grow and expand and learn. I'm sure that there are going to be things that come out there season in April's character that I never saw coming because there are always surprises with that kind of stuff, which is why I love being on this show. It's exciting to get to constantly be surprised by who your character is.
And how is her relationship with Owen?
Well, I think we're just going to see them working closely together, and I think she's always looked up to him as her mentor. I think she's going to start taking charge a lot more than she has before. And not waiting for someone to give her the, “OK, now you can try.” No, I'm going to take the reins. I'm going to do it myself. So we'll see.
