Today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that co-showrunners and executive producers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater are leaving Grey’s for a two-year development deal with CBS Television Studios (starting in summer 2014). The real-life couple started on the hit ABC medical drama throughout eight seasons, and Tony is notorious for posting spoilers and amazing behind-the-scenes photos, plus directing 10 episodes.
In 2011, they started overseeing the writers’ room, tapped as co-showrunners as they completed their deal with ABC Studios. Of course, creator Shonda Rhimes is still at the head of the show, so directionally, things won’t change much after Season 10. However, it is a huge loss for Grey’s fans who have kept up with Tony and Joan (and their fantastic writing) throughout the show’s nine seasons.
We will kick off Season 10 with an episode penned by Joan, though, so we have that to look forward to! According to a photo of the script for the two-hour premiere, she wrote the episode and Rob Corn (who directed the Season 9 finale) is directing. We’re excited to see what she brings to the table for the epic season opener.
Are you upset that Tony and Joan are leaving? Either way, feel free to leave your congratulations for the couple below!
