With Sandra Oh departing at the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 10, Cristina Yang and Owen Hunt’s relationship — romantic or not — is a ticking time bomb. While we still have an entire season to go, their “major fallout” may happen sooner rather than later.
Even though Kevin McKidd has big dreams for his character, Owen, and Cristina down the road, the fact of the matter is that they’re in a complicated mess because of their co-dependency. While he is seemingly moving on with new woman Emma (as seen in the 200th episode), he can’t fully commit with Cristina around.
“It doesn't seem to me that it would be easy for Owen to be with anyone else — really be with them — while Cristina is still at the hospital. It's been a huge part of his life, and she is the love of his life,” Kevin told TV Guide. “That's going to be an interesting complication to play with because I don't think he will ever be fully in with somebody else until Cristina decides she's going to remove herself from this place. Then, there's going to be some major fallout from Owen when that happens, because they're co-dependent. They need each other.”
Cristina and Owen tried to break up, hooked up for a while, and then finally cut ties, but will that last? To help facilitate this, Kevin says that Owen will have to “develop other relationships” with other doctors, including Callie, Derek, and maybe even Meredith!
“[I’d like] him and Meredith to maybe heal,” Kevin said. “There's always been an abrasive quality between him and Meredith. Hopefully that can thaw a little bit and become a warmer relationship, because she always had Cristina's back.”
As if we need more craziness and drama for Cristina and Meredith, who are at each other’s throats in Episode 5: “I Bet It Stung”! However, at the end of the day, Kevin notes it will be all about Callie.
“He's going to develop a strong relationship with Callie. What happens with Callie and Arizona mirrors what happened a couple of seasons ago with Cristina and Owen. Callie really needs someone right now,” he said. “I think it will take a while for him to open up to the idea that there has to be a life beyond Cristina. He has to do that because she's leaving.”
Parting is such sweet sorrow, but do you think Owen and Cristina should be together at the end or apart? Sound off below!
