Grey’s Anatomy Season 11: Will Bailey Battle Alex? Shonda Rhimes Says…

In case you'd forgotten, the Grey's Anatomy Season 10 finale wasn't about surgeon departures, relationship ultimatums, and long-lost siblings. Another cliffhanger that has us wringing our hands until Season 11 begins is the inevitable showdown between Alex and Bailey over the seat on the hospital board to which they're both entitled.

Richard (James Pickens Jr.) promised the open seat to Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who arguably deserves it; but what Richard didn't realize is that Cristina (Sandra Oh) bequeathed the same seat to Alex (Justin Chambers), who arguably deserves it.

As Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes reveals to The Hollywood Reporter, Alex is a bit overwhelmed by the prospect. "What [Cristina's decision] means for him is complex," she muses. "Does he want that? Is that what he's looking for? Did he want the money grab that being Dr. Butthole provided him or does he want to be the guy who has a seat on the board? That is a big deal for him to figure out what he wants."

And should he decide he wants the seat, he's gonna face stiff competition by a doc who is, to paraphrase a classic line of film dialogue, mad as hell and not gonna that it anymore.

"Bailey is not going to go quietly," Shonda tells TV Guide. "Bailey has taken a lot of crap and had a lot of hits, and Bailey is done having a lot of hits. I do feel like she has been very overlooked and underestimated. She may be done with that at this point."

Sounds like there are no clear answers — and you readers are nearly split on the matter. When we polled you back in May, 58 percent of you said that Bailey deserves the seat more than Alex does — not exactly a sweeping majority.

How do you think the situation will resolve? Speculate away in the comments below.

Grey's Anatomy Season 11 premieres Thursday, September 25, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
