Game of Thrones Season 3: The Best Episodes

Game of Thrones Season 3 has come to an end, and though all 10 episodes were good, there were a few that stood out in the pack. Here are our picks for the best episodes of the season.

Episode 9: “The Rains of Castamere”

This episode featured Jon Snow’s betrayal of the Wildlings, which happened in dramatic fashion, with Jon unknowingly aided in his escape by his brother Bran (in the form his direwolf, Summer). That was a great scene, no doubt, but the real reason this episode stands out is because it featured one of the most shocking events in the history of television: The Red Wedding. The matrimonial ceremony between Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey that turned into a slaughter of Starks was handled wonderfully, with all the shock, gore, and emotional heft the scene required. The Red Wedding nearly broke the internet, and personally we’re still searching for a therapist to help us get over it. Now that’s what we call good television!

Episode 4: “And Now His Watch Is Ended”

The title of this episode references the mutiny in the Night’s Watch, where Lord Commander Mormont is killed by his own men and Sam barely escapes with Gilly and her baby. That scene was thrilling and utterly suspenseful, but like our previous entrant, it was outdone by the episode’s climactic final scene. We are of course referring to the scene where Dany gains her army of Unsullied in Astapor, and then unleashes her dragon on the city. Everything about the scene got our hearts racing: the brilliant score, the Unsullied moving in unison to Dany’s commands, and, of course, witnessing the genesis of Dany’s badass new catch phrase: Dracarys. We still have goosebumps.

Episode 5: “Kissed By Fire”

While this episode didn’t have a single epic scene to match the Red Wedding or Dracarys, it may have been the most solidly great episode from start to finish. The episode had everything. You want romance? How about Jon Snow forsaking his vows and giving in to weeks of sexual tension with Ygritte in the cave. You want action? We give you the Hound dueling Beric Dondarrion and his flaming sword, and then Dondarrion rising from the dead after losing. You want your heartstrings pulled? Watch with tear-filled eyes as grey-scaled and neglected Shireen Baratheon teaches imprisoned Davos how to read. You want great performances? Look no further than Jaime’s amazing bathtub confession to Brienne about how he earned the name Kingslayer. In fact, we can’t think of a thing we didn’t like about this episode, which is why it’s our pick for the best of the season.
