Once Upon a Time Season 3: Robert Carlyle Says Neverland Is a “Suicide Mission” For Rumple — Exclusive

When we last left our favorite fairy tale characters on Once Upon a Time, they were setting sail for a new land: Neverland. The unlikely friends — The Charmings, Regina, Rumplestiltskin, and Emma — banded together aboard the Jolly Roger with Captain Hook to save Henry from evil Peter Pan, but when the show returns this fall (Sunday, September 29 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC), it won’t all be fun and games.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Robert Carlyle (Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold) at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about what’s to come, and he revealed some unsettling tidbits. As Lana Parrilla hinted to us, everyone who hates each other in that confined space is bad news, and for Rumple, it’s a “suicide mission.” Read on to see what he had to say about Peter Pan’s “massive” role and what we can expect from the not-so-Jolly Roger.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What’s happening in Neverland in Season 3 so far?

Robert Carlyle: I’m halfway through the first episode so very little. I guess something I can tell you is that at the end of Season 2, Episode 22 [the finale], we seem to be together in some kind of way, but lasts about two minutes. In Season 3, that’s over right away. Because in typical Gold fashion you have to listen very carefully to what he’s saying. Even though at the end of Season 2 he’s saying if we’re going to go do this together, I’m the man to do this, was he actually saying that? No, he wasn’t! He’s never saying what you think he’s saying, because this is a one-way kind of mission for him. His son is dead he believes and the only way in any way that he can honor the memory of his son is to find his son. So even though by doing that it’s going to be his undoing — which this seer had told him hundreds of years before. So in a sense, Rumplestiltskin is in a very difficult place at the beginning of Season 3. This is a suicide mission for him in his mind, and it might well be.

What can you tell us about Henry and why Tamara and Greg have brought him to Neverland?

I honestly don’t know; I’ve got two scripts. Again, without giving too much away, Peter Pan comes into Season 3 as a massive character. Maybe we’ll find out who Peter Pan actually is? We just know him as the leader of these Lost Boys in this land where you never grow old. Has he always been there? Where did he come from? So that’s very interesting. And why does he want Henry?
