Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time Season 3 Speculation: Who Will Be Storybrooke’s Next Mayor?

With Regina, Emma, Snow, Charming, and Rumple gone, Storybrooke is suffering from a serious vacuum of leadership. Who might step up to fill Regina’s position as mayor in Once Upon a Time Season 3? Here is a list of the four most likely candidates and whether we think they would be any good at the job.

When Charmings & Co. vamoosed to Neverland, Rumple left Belle (Emilie de Ravin) in charge of protecting the town with a cloaking spell. We wonder if her newfound role as town protector will take. On one hand, Belle is a compassionate, clever, well-read girl who isn’t afraid to take the tough road (like hunting down, and then saving, rogue Yaogui). On the other hand, Belle is a relative newcomer to town. She has spent most of her time in The Land Without Magic (aka our world) either sequestered in a mental hospital or as a “scantily-clad barfly” named Lacey. That doesn’t make for a good campaign platform.

Platform priorities: tourism (just in case); the library (of course)

Campaign headquarters: The Storybrooke Public Library

Grumpy (Lee Arenberg) is a proven leader who speaks his mind no matter what the consequences. He has an idealistic heart (as referenced by his previous moniker, “Dreamy”), but has been hardened by the years into a more pragmatic type. Along with his ability to inspire productivity in his fellow residents (i.e. the other dwarves) and his demonstrated ability to supervise large-scale projects (i.e. magic bean harvesting), we think this balance between idealism and pragmatism would serve a Storybrooke mayor well. On the other hand, Grumpy also has a tendency to let his anger rule his actions (as referenced by his current moniker). When Dr. Whale was leading a mob to Regina’s house post-curse, Grumpy was more than willing to grab a pitchfork. Storybrooke has already had one tempestuous leader. They may not need another.

Platform priorities: worker’s comp.; fair wages

Campaign headquarters: the mine (What? There’s a lot of space down there.)

Archie (Raphael Sbarge), resident therapist and go-to friend, is a calm, level-headed man. When Dr. Whale was leading that aforementioned mob? Archie was the one who told the Charmings and Emma, in hopes they would stop it. He is not one to act without thinking, and he knows how to keep others in check. I mean, the man is probably the only reason Regina wasn’t constantly crushing people’s hearts on Main Street. This town could use an impartial leader who everyone seems to trust. Also, Pongo would make an excellent Deputy Mayor. On the other hand, Archie is more of a thinker than a doer. He went to the Charmings to stop the mob, rather than trying to stop them himself. Storybrooke is the type of town where crises can strike at any moment. In these situations, quick-thinking and decisive action is needed. Could Archie handle it?

Platform priorities: mental health; installation of a town dog park

Campaign Headquarters: his psychiatrist office

Dr. Whale

Dr. Whale (David Anders) is a bit...unstable, but he seems to be ready and willing to lead. We’ve mentioned the mob thing, right? He’s also incredibly smart - like, “able to kind of, sort of bring back the dead” smart - and, when he isn’t letting his guilt rule him, he can actually be pretty cool (like in this scene with Ruby). On the other hand, he is also an alcoholic with a penchant for mob-leading and ill-advised flirting. We have to admit, we don’t think Whale would make a very good mayor (especially without Ruby around to keep him in line), but we think he is the type to grab power when he sees it. With the Charmings gone, he could very well be Storybrooke’s next mayor.

Platform priorities: research and development

Campaign headquarters: his super secret laboratory lair
