Scandal Season 3 Spoilers: Fitz Declares “Ugly” and “Toxic” War With Mellie

Scandal fans ‘round the world dropped their popcorn when the big reveal happened at the end of the Season 3 premiere. It was a Grant who leaked Olivia Pope’s name to the press, but not the one we thought — it was President Fitz himself!

However, with Mellie as the mastermind behind a new plan — framing Jeannine Locke as Fitz’s mistress instead, with the help of Cyrus and the Gladiators — things are derailed, and in turn, an all-out battle is ahead for the Grants.

“I declare war. We continue to be at war, but it goes into various stages of hot war and cold war. It's insane because when our allegiances or agendas line up, we suddenly fall into step, then all of a sudden we're at each other,” Tony Goldwyn tells TV Guide. “There are forces that start to reveal themselves that become very, very threatening to the stability of the whole thing. In that way, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. So when Mellie and I are aligned in that way, we come into lockstep, and Cyrus too. In other ways, it's very ugly between us. Uglier than you've ever really seen, I think. It's just toxic. It's awful.”

Sounds like Scandal to us. With Fitz’s agenda to eventually make Olivia his First Lady messed up, what’s next? As seen in the promo, Olivia will clear the air — or at least try to — for Jeannine, and all roads still lead to a hopeful reelection for Fitz. Bellamy Young (Mellie) recently hinted that she’ll be fighting for him to stay in office, and her on-screen husband is on the same page — sort of.

“Fitz wants to win. He intends to be president again,” Tony continues. “At the end of last season, he was convinced he could do it by leaving his wife, but that didn't work out so well, so he has to find another way. How Olivia figures into that is very interesting and very complicated.”

In addition to Olivia figuring into his plan, we also have Vice President Sally Langston to worry about. Although Fitz made her a seemingly great offer in the premiere, it all backfired for her, leaving her very unhappy at the end of the hour. So, will she be his biggest opponent come election time?

“I don't know yet. She might be. But other people will come into the picture to complicate matters,” Tony hints. “We don't know if Sally is going to be an opponent yet because she's my vice president, so that's never been done before, but she might. She'd be formidable. We'll see what happens.”

Open-ended, vague answers are to be expected from the Scandal cast, but waiting for those secrets to unfold is always worth it. Do you think Fitz and Olivia will end up together? Will Sally become president? Sound off below, and catch the next episode on Thursday, October 10 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
