On Once Upon a Time, there is a delicate balance between Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest, but sometimes it is still difficult to keep them straight. Heading into Season 3, yet another land — Neverland, to be precise — is being added to the mix, which is bound to cause more confusion.
However, series co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis have a plan to keep everything in check. With the two existing lands plus Neverland and the Jolly Roger en route to save Henry, Adam promises to Examiner that this season is all about “taming the beast.”
“You do not have to sit there with a chart and pause and go: ‘Wait a minute, where am I, which world?’” Eddy added, to which Adam notes it will be “very clear in a very linear way where we’re going, who we’re with, and what we’re exploring, so that it’s not a flow chart situation.”
That sounds promising to us, especially with the two segmented halves of the season feeling like two seasons. Eleven episodes will air in the fall without a break (before a long, 11-week hiatus), and Eddy says they will be “focused on our core characters and their journey.” With that said, there won’t be “eight different timelines” or any other craziness confusing the audience.
“There’s a fine line in complexity and confusing,” Adam notes. “We love the show to be complex, but we never want it to be confusing. We want it to be a story that is super engaging and that has different levels to it, and that is something that you can jump into it.”
It sounds like that same mentality will be applied to spin-off Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Both Adam and Eddy noted during the ATX Television Festival panel that you don’t have to watch OUAT to understand Wonderland. That sounds good to us — five timelines and worlds are going to be hard to juggle!
Ultimately, Adam and Eddy are ready to tell a “journey” — a “condensed story with a beginning, middle, and end for the first eleven and for the second eleven” without interruption. They were as frustrated as we were with hiatuses this year — Eddy notes, “I know last year they would air five minutes and then not again for four weeks, so… that was fun.” — and are ready to dive into these three worlds in an exciting new way.
