Once Upon a Time Season 3 is taking viewers to Neverland, and perhaps no one is more excited to explore that fairy tale world than the writers themselves! Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with OUAT writer Jane Espenson at the 2013 ATX Festival to talk about all things Season 3 — from Neverland and Peter Pan to Rumbelle and potential new 'ships.
"At the end of Season 2, they're taking off for Neverland, so Season 3 is that adventure," Jane told Wetpaint. "I really think people are going to love where we're going in Season 3. We are really focusing in on the emotional arcs of these characters, particularly our core characters."
Of course, the season will also explore the mythology of Peter Pan, a beloved fairy tale character in the Disney world. However, Oncers know him best as the creepy shadow figure who steals children and never lets them leave Neverland. Was that characterization always meant to be?
"We often like to play characters against type, like when we did Little Red Riding Hood and we revealed that she's also half, part-time the wolf," Jane explained. "So we like to look at what's a new take for this character."
As excited as we are to explore Neverland, we can't forget about our friends in Storybrooke, especially Belle. The last we saw of Belle she was crying on the dock watching her True Love, Rumple, sail off into the distance. Is Belle going to crack under the pressure of keeping the town safe? Not if Jane has her say! "I think Belle is a very strong person, and a very strong character," she said.
And Rumbelle fans, don't you worry. Belle and Rumple's goodbye wasn't forever.
"I think fans should always be scared," joked Jane. "But shows are on the air for seven years, so the notion that we would take a beloved couple and split them up now and never give them a scene together again, that's not how I would play it. I'd be surprised if that were the case."
