Olivia Pope's (Kerry Washington) mother has always been a character on Scandal, but it’s about to get real where she’s concerned. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Liv’s mom will be coming to the small screen sooner than we thought — this Thursday!
Actress Khandi Alexander, who last starred on HBO’s Treme, will be playing Olivia’s mother, Maya Lewis. Now, before you start freaking out too much, so far all we know is that she’ll be appearing in a series of flashbacks. We repeat, Liv’s mom is not alive, so far as we’ve heard. Because — wait for it — we just couldn’t handle that. (Sorry.)
As fans have recently learned, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) was involved in an operation in which he shot down a civilian plane — on which Liv’s mom was flying! Further, the man responsible for giving the order to murder 300 innocents was given by Liv’s dad, Rowan.
What does this mean for Scandal, now in its third season? Well, if they’re going back to Olivia’s past, via the flashbacks, we’ll likely learn a lot more about how she ended up the queen of the white hats. Was her relationship with Dad always so contentious? And why would he give the order to murder his own wife?
Now, back to that conspiracy theory again: Do you think Olivia’s mom is really dead? Could Operation Remington have even more to it than we’ve ever imagined? Now that they have a strong actress in the wings, Olivia’s life might just get even more complicated. Good thing that’s when she thrives the most.
