The Walking Dead Season 4 and the Future of Baby Judith: “It Did Not Look Good”, But Is She Really Dead?

By the end of The Walking Dead Season 4 mid-season finale, The Governor (David Morrissey) and Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) were definitely dead, seeing as The Gov. hacked off Hershel’s head and the big bad was later stabbed by Michonne (Danai Gurira) and then shot by Lilly.

But one of the show’s smallest characters’ whereabouts were unknown by the time the finale ended in a bloody mess. Yes, we’re talking about Baby Judith. As Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) were fleeing the prison, Carl came across little Judith’s bloody car seat. Both Grimes men assumed little Ass Kicker was a goner, but we never actually saw her body, just a pool of blood which could have belonged to anyone.

Still, we’d be much more confident that Judith was still alive if the other kids (Lizzie and co.) had just held onto her. When asked about the possibility that the tyke did, in fact, die, Scott Gimple tells The Hollywood Reporter, “There are a lot of walkers around there as well. It did not look good, and I don't want to say one way or another but what you see tells a story.”

Robert Kirkman also alludes to the idea that Judith’s fate is tied into a bigger story, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “You can presume [that Judith is dead]; you'll never know until we know. We are keeping that as a mystery that will be revealed in the back half. That blood had to come from somewhere and I certainly wouldn't feel too comfortable about the status of that baby.”

Our guess is that it may take a few episodes to find out if Judith is alive or dead, but Rick and Carl will still be under the impression that she’s gone when Season 4 resumes on February 9, 2014.

“He’s definitely in a bad place,”Robert says of Rick, telling Entertainment Weekly, “He and Carl are gonna be on their own for a bit. There’s some pretty dark stuff on the road ahead. They’re both in pretty bad shape. This will be the low for a while and then we’ll find a new one later on, hopefully.”

Honestly, we sincerely hope the Michonne or someone else managed to snatch Baby Judith before they peaced out of the prison, but with this show one can never be too sure about anything.

Speaking again to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert continues, “This event is a rude awakening for them. Carl is at a very interesting place when we pick up in the back half of the season. The events of the mid-season finale are very present on his mind and it's something that will affect him for the duration of the series. There's big stuff that's going to come from this.”

Maybe Carl’s current mental state can help explain why he’s leading two walkers away from a house in the only sneak peek of the final eight episodes we’ve seen so far.
