Toby Calls Himself Spencer’s Boyfriend in “A is for A-L-I-V-E”
The Season 4 premiere was an important episode for Spoby after a dramatic reconciliation in the Season 3 finale. Could their relationship survive after Toby’s “A” Team shenanigans and fake death? Yep! In this ep, we see Toby making Spencer breakfast, trying to take her mind off of Wilden’s recent murder. He calls himself her “boyfriend,” and Spencer says she likes the sound of that. So do we, Spence. So do we.
Toby Opens Up to Spencer About His Mom’s Death in “Turn of the Shoe”
When Toby confesses to moving “A”’s RV, Spencer freaks out. But, when he shows her the transcript of his mother’s final session with Dr. Palmer before her death, she softens. She reads the transcript aloud, and agrees that Marion Cavanaugh didn’t sound like someone who was about to kill herself. A visibly upset Toby begs Spencer no to tell the Liars about the RV, and Spencer agrees, hugging Toby. This is a heartbreaking scene, but speaks to the trust and love Spencer has for Toby even after everything that went down in Season 3. It also sets the scene or the entire half-season, during which Spencer goes to great lengths to help Toby on the search for the truth about his mother’s death.
Spencer Takes Toby’s Hand in “Cat’s Cradle”
We love when Spoby plays super sleuths! In Season 4, Episode 3: “Cat’s Cradle,” the two break into Radley to check out the spot Toby’s mom supposedly jumped from. Spooky, we know, but it’s also kind of heartwarming that Spencer is willing to go back to the place of her recent breakdown. Also heartwarming? When Spencer reaches out to hold Toby’s hand in front of the darkened window Marion allegedly jumped from. They’re in this together.
Spoby Takes Ravenswood in “Under the Gun”
We’re still not sure if we found theRavenswood introduction effective. The town was spooky, but we had no idea what was going on - in a floundering way, not an intriguing way. One thing we did love about the ep, though? Toby and Spencer get to take a field trip! Things don’t exactly go smoothly between the two (but we do get to hear the awesome line, “You’re following a lead from a bird.”) Toby accuses Spencer of not being able to let things go. But when things start to get really spooky (i.e. birds gathering en masse), Spencer grabs Toby’s hand and the two make a break for it. Basically, no matter what they’re fighting about, these two make a badass team.
