That Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) is such a nice Southern gentleman. In this new sneak peek of The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 9, "After," Carl sees a walker couple banging on the front door of a house and he leads them down a country lane.
What's the backstory?
Episode 9 (premiering Sunday, February 9) is sticking close to the comic books, so it should follow what Michonne (Danai Gurira) and — separate from her — Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) do after the prison battle.
Carl is OK, physically anyway, but Rick is pretty seriously beat up. They eventually take shelter in a home, and since Rick is not even at 50 percent, never mind 100, Carl takes charge. In the comics, walkers knock on the home's front door and Carl leads them away, which is what we're seeing here. He's salty about it, too, taunting the poor dead couple.
This is a very close match with the first sneak peek AMC shared for Episode 9, right after the December 1 midseason finale. It also fits with two of the photos released for this episode — one showing Carl leading these walkers down the street, and another with Carl looking serious as Rick is apparently passed out on the couch.
TVLine saw Episode 9 in advance and they gave props to Chandler for his transformation as an actor: "Not only does the Feb. 9 midseason premiere — titled 'After' — further open a window to Michonne’s past, it also kinda serves as Carl’s official coming-of-age episode. And trust me when I say that you’ll never again think about discounting Chandler Riggs as just a good 'kid actor' — his work here is exceptional."
Our little boy's all grown up! Chandler was 10 when he was cast on the show and now he's 14. No one has changed more than him or his character.
Are you excited for Carl’s big showcase? Here are three other Episode 9 reviews: Entertainment Weekly talks about a wordless opening and dream sequence, E! News mentions a Michonne flashback, and TV Guide previews a return for ... that guy? Really?
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
