The Walking Dead Season 4: What Happens to Carol in the Comics?

Spoilers ahead from The Walking Dead comic series, which may or may not relate to the TV show.

Carol Peletier is like The Walking Dead’s own mini Sarah Connor. In the first Terminator movie, Sarah was more victim than hero — then she got buff and badass in T2. Entering Season 4, our Carol has gone from mousy housewife to grieving mother to tough survivor who teaches kids how to use knives and become strong.

Besides knife school, what’s next for Carol? We know she and Daryl will still be close and share some cute double-entendre banter, if nothing else. Beyond that, we’re turning to the comics in case they hold hints to Carol’s future — or maybe someone else’s future if they borrow some of her plot for another character.

Showrunner Scott Gimple said Season 4 (which starts October 13) will be like a “remix” of the comics, but we reeeeeaaaaallllllyyyy hope they don’t give TV Carol the same storyline as comics Carol, since the characters are so different and TV Carol has become so cool. Considering Daryl isn’t even in the comics, we think it’s safe to say TV Carol is safe from her book fate.

What is that fate? At first, it’s not that bad. In the comics, she hooks up with Tyreese, who joins the Atlanta/prison group much earlier than on TV. Tyreese and Carol (who is in her 20s in the comics) become a couple, but he eventually cheats on her with Michonne. After the breakup, sensitive Carol’s already delicate mental state deteriorates. She cuts her wrist in front of Sophia (who is still alive in the comics) but survives. Looking for companionship, Carol even proposes a polygamous relationship with Rick and Lori (also still alive at this point). The Grimes family turns her down.

Feeling rejected in general, Carol starts planning her suicide. She talks with Lori about what would happen if she, Carol, died; Lori says she would take care of Sophia. Carol then finds a walker that’s being kept around for testing purposes, and starts pouring her heart out to it. She moves closer and allows the walker to bite her. She is eventually put down by Andrea (also alive in the comics).

Considering how much stronger TV Carol has become than comics Carol — and how many people involved in her comics story are already dead on the TV show or involved with other people — this can’t happen to our Carol. But could someone else at the prison commit suicide, either by allowing a zombie to bite them or taking another way out from despair? That’s possible.

What do you think? Is Carol’s comic story completely off the table for anyone, or could we see another love triangle and/or suicide?

The Walking Dead Season 4 premieres on October 13 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
