The Walking Dead Season 4: Christian Serratos Talks Rosita’s Backstory, “Paralyzing” Fear of Knives

We first met Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos) several episodes ago on The Walking Dead Season 4. She was introduced alongside her man Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) and Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), but until last Sunday’s Episode 15: “Us,” we didn’t get to see much of her individual personality.

In the March 23 instalment, however, Rosita proved herself to be a feisty gal who doesn’t take BS from anyone. We look forward to getting to know her better in TWD Season 5 (assuming she survives) and actress Christian Serratos even talked to Yahoo about her character’s backstory.

“Without giving too much away, Scott did tell me before I started doing the show what he imagined her background was. He said he imagines that she grew up before the apocalypse with a family of just men. Probably had a lot of brothers and a father who taught her how to take care of herself in the real world,” she dished. “She probably lost her family somewhere along the way, had lived in Houston, and somehow met up with Abraham and Eugene finally, and now that's what's driving her. Everyone needs a role in this world, something to strive for, to keep them moving. This is her mission, to keep Eugene safe with Abraham. That's all she has right now, so she's going to do it to the best of her ability.”

And even though joining the cast of an established show like TWD halfway through the fourth season could be daunting, Christian says she had a seamless, very pleasant experience, revealing, “You assume everyone has this bond, and it might be hard to integrate yourself into the group. It's really not, though. Everyone's personalities on set, crew, the writers, the producers, the actors, their attitudes are definitely a reason why the show is so great. They were just very warm and let us in with open arms. We were immediately all very close.”

While bonding with the cast may have been a piece of cake, Christian’s intense fear of knives was something that was much more difficult to overcome on set loaded with a wide array of weapons and sharp objects.

“I'm growing out of it, actually, thankfully, but I had a paralyzing fear of knives and anything sharp,” she recounts. “I would have panic attacks, and it would completely immobilize me. It got to the point where I was buying food that I knew I would not have to cut with a knife.”

Yikes! But despite her paralyzing fear, Christian says she didn’t connect TWD to sharp objects until after she landed the role and friends wondered how she would cope. Thankfully, she seems to be winning out over her unique fear.

“The first few weeks on set, I had a fake knife in my back pocket. You can't really tell, I think yet, on the show, but [Rosita's] belts have two pistols in them, and a knife on the back. That was fake. But I think I'm going to graduate I think I might want a legit one,” she said with a laugh.

The Walking Dead Season 4 finale airs Sunday, March 30, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
