The Walking Dead Season 4: Beth Will Be “Caught in the Crossfire” of Daryl’s Existential Crisis

And here we thought Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) had hit the jackpot to get alone time with Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) in the second half of The Walking Dead Season 4. Maybe she’s not so lucky after all.

TV Guide warned that the Daryl we’ll see on this Sunday’s (February 16) Episode 10, “Inmates,” may not be the same guy we’ve grown to love. "We're really going to be seeing him struggling with whether he can maintain who he's become or is he going to revert back to who he was before," comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman told the magazine. "Sadly, it looks like Beth is going to be caught in the crossfire."

One sneak peek for Episode 10 shows Beth desperately trying to get Daryl motivated to get up and do something. She has hope. She doesn’t believe they are the only survivors. He just sits there at the fire, saying nothing. Total Debbie Downer. Another video shows him tracking in the woods, so he does eventually get moving. (Unless that video takes place before the sad fire video?) But in general it looks like a lot of Daryl’s sparkle is diminished.

As Robert Kirkman noted in a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Daryl, more than any other character, has allowed his existence in this group and his role within this pocket of civilization to define who he is as a person, and he's allowed it to make him grow as a person. And now everything that has had a positive influence on him — that has helped him turn into someone he respects and likes for the first time — has vanished.”

Don’t turn away from the light, Daryl!

We’ve been wondering if Beth and Daryl might actually split up at some point, based partly on promo editing but also on what each one might want to do next. Beth is most likely to want to look for her sister Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan), whereas Daryl … what will Daryl want to do? Look for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln)? For Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride)? For no one? Maybe he’ll actually follow Beth’s lead. He may not have her motivation but we can’t see him totally abandoning her, never mind passing up the chance to show off his tracking skills.

We know a Daryl-focused episode is coming up, so maybe we’ll get into his head the way we’ll be getting into Beth’s mindset to see how these characters tick. The Daryl of Season 1 was mostly angry about losing Merle, and it took the Sophia situation, bonding with Carol, and a status upgrade as Rick’s new post-Shane BFF to bring out the best in him. Hopefully he’ll stay focused on bringing the group back together instead of assuming he and Beth are on their own.

Do you think Beth will be in danger in the second half, or will Daryl have her back, even if he’s depressed about losing the Team Prison family?

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. Get more details on Episode 10 here.
