As another great AMC show once put it, tread lightly.
The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) has a huge fan base, and there’s a passionate subsection that wants him to either be with Carol (Melissa McBride) or no one. Last night in the Season 4 premiere, Beth’s (Emily Kinney) boyfriend died in a Big Spot run and she seemed less worried about that than making sure Daryl got a good hug and felt comforted. There are some Daryl-Beth shippers out there who probably enjoyed that moment, but for others some red flags may have gone up.
Last night on Talking Dead, host Chris Hardwick asked showrunner Scott Gimple about the Daryl-Beth scene: "Did it seem like she held on to Daryl for like a second too long, maybe?
Scott replied, "I will just say — and I'm not even entertaining that — but I'm saying that scene and what she laid out in that scene, her emotional reaction to that and Daryl's reaction to her reaction is one of those things that will play out throughout the season."
So there’s good news for “Caryl” shippers — he’s not exactly feeding the idea of a romance between this grown man (Pookie!) and Maggie’s (Lauren Cohan) teenage little sister — but it’s also good news for people who want more Beth-Daryl scenes, and anyone who has no ‘ship at all but just wants to know if Beth is getting stone cold like Carl (Chandler Riggs) or what.
Scott also talked about the Beth-Daryl relationship with The Hollywood Reporter. THR said the two characters have chemistry and share an approach to dealing with this world. “Could there be something more than friendship between them this season?” Scott replied, “The scenes with all these characters are there for a reason and it's way beyond a reason in this episode. The characters all establish things we explore throughout this entire season. Will we be exploring more of the Daryl-Beth dynamic? Absolutely.”
They may have more scenes together, but that doesn’t necessarily mean more than, say, Michonne’s (Danai Gurira) budding friendship with Carl. Those two characters understand each other, and maybe Daryl and Beth can either come to “get” each other or maybe Daryl will look after Beth like a little sister. Besides, remember last season when there was that promo showing Beth giving Rick a kiss, and people speculated that Beth had a crush on Rick? It was just a thank you kiss for Rick saving Maggie in Woodbury. Maybe Emily Kinney just has chemistry with everyone.
What do you think? Are you intrigued or freaked out by the idea of further exploring the Beth-Daryl dynamic?
The Walking Dead Season 4 airs at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
