The Powers That Be over at The Walking Dead run a very tight ship, and while we understand why they wouldn’t want fans to spoil major plotlines, the producers and showrunner Scott Gimple are even notoriously stingy with what they choose to share with their own cast members. For example, Brighton Sharbino (Lizzie Samuels) and Kyla Kenedy (Mika Samuels) were the only people who knew that Lizzie was the one feeding rats to the walkers before it was revealed in the script for Episode 14: “The Grove.”
Oftentimes cast members know the general direction their character’s story will head in within a given season, but they aren’t given a good amount of specific information. Emily Kinney (Beth Greene) confirmed as much when she chatted with AMCTV.com after Beth was seemingly kidnapped in Season 4, Episode 13: “Alone.”
“They don’t tell you much, but I did know that Beth would have a boyfriend at the beginning of the season and she’d be trying out this different, more hardened way of dealing with it. She’s trying on these attitudes, the way a lot of teenagers do, to find ways to deal with the loss around her,” the 28-year-old actress began when asked about what she knew about her character’s storyline going into Season 4. “I also knew that she would get separated at some point, and I knew that she would form a really good bond with the person she got separated with. You don’t get to hear a lot of Beth’s voice in most of last season, but there was that point a few episodes ago where she was writing, and it’s a voiceover of the whole ordeal and her thoughts on things. That was so great for me because before I was just filling it in with my own imagination.”
As viewers, we’ve enjoyed getting to know Beth, especially seeing her character open up to and bond with Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). It’s a shame she was kidnapped just as she and Daryl were getting to know each other, and while we sincerely hope she’s still alive, we’re ready for the worst as we prepare for the Season 4 finale this Sunday.
