Downton Abbey Season 4 Premiere: Watch Anna Help WHICH Fired Character? (VIDEO)
The sudden passing of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) didn’t just change life for everyone upstairs at Downton Abbey. With Matthew gone forever, his valet Mr. Molesley (Kevin Doyle) is officially out of a job.
Dowager Countess Violet (Maggie Smith) tries to help out; she spends most of the premiere’s first hour plotting for Mr. Molesely to get a new gig with her friend Lady Shackleton (Dame Harriet Walter). Unfortunately, those plans fall through, leaving Mr. Molesely desperate and still unemployed.
So what’s a highly skilled man to do? Manual labor, it would seem. In a clip from the second part of the premiere, we see a dirty, slightly worse for wear Molesely working as a laborer. In the video, Anna spots her former co-worker (and one-time admirer) while walking through the village.
“I’m sure if you just wait something better will turn up,” she says in an effort to be encouraging. “I have waited,” Molesely says, his voice pleading, our hearts aching. He owes money all over town, he explains, leading the kind-hearted Anna to offer her and Mr. Bates’s (Brendan Coyle) small savings as aid. Such charity, however, Molesely can’t accept and so the scene ends after a very rude man we’d very much like to smack with a glove yells, “Get back to work!”
