The Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 6: Prepare to Meet The Governor — Then and Now

All we saw was a flash of The Governor (David Morrissey) outside the prison on The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 5, "Internment." The promo and sneak peek videos released so far just show The Governor either on his own or right after the Season 3 massacre with Martinez and, presumably, Shumpert.

What can we expect to see in Episode 6, "Live Bait"?

Showrunner Scott Gimple told Entertainment Weekly, "We will be really getting into who this guy is, to further define this guy. He did something very pronounced at the end of the season that defines him a certain way that affected him a great deal. That’s changed him a great deal. So we will see who this man is now. There will absolutely be a flashback element to filling in some of those blanks. More so, I would say, than we did with rejoining the prison."

Who he is now is definitely affected by his shooting of his own Woodbury people. "We know that Rick welcomed basically the remaining people in,” Scott continued. “That town did very much make up that man’s identity. And his purpose. And everything he was fighting for. And asking the question, what’s left after that?— we’re gonna see. We’re gonna answer that question. We’re gonna show that. [...] Being stripped away of all these things brings him down to the core of who he is. And also, I would say the man that The Governor is in the zombie apocalypse at Woodbury is not necessarily the man he was before the turn. Being stripped of that identity puts him back at day 1 as far as who he is."

On that "day 1" note, Scott added that he "very much dug" Robert Kirkman's graphic novels about The Governor, Rise of the Governor and The Road to Woodbury. "We were talking a lot about those novels. I think they were inspiring to this story and there are some moments some people might sort of recognize, but it’s also pretty different."

So maybe we shouldn't delve too deep into the novels, but we did expect to see some of Rise, perhaps in Episode 6.

In the novels, Philip Blake does have a daughter Penny but he's actually The Governor's brother and Penny is The Gov’s niece. Our future Gov's name is Brian Blake, and he takes on his bro's identity when Philip dies.

Maybe the TV show won't even go there with the brother angle, but over the summer there was a casting notice for Episode 6 that mentioned an older man with a granddaughter, a single mother/former nurse, and a "tough and funny woman." Earlier this season, Alanna Masterson was cast in a mystery role, with speculation that she’d be playing Tara Chalmers, a character from Rise of the Governor who has a sister named April and a father named David. Maybe we'll see a version of that?

Maybe we'll even see how Penny became a walker, since the (second) killing of Penny is essentially what prompted The Governor to lose the rest of his mind in Season 3. In the novel, Penny is shot by a gang member who invaded the house in which Philip, Brian and their two friends were staying.

We'll have to wait and see how much of the novel's material they use, but it will be interesting to hear a little more about The Gov's history. Maybe we'll even become sympathetic toward him?

As Scot told EW, "I am just very excited to dig into this character and that people will see all sorts of sides of him that we hinted at before. Just as I was totally curious about the audience reaction to what happened with Rick and Carol, there’s moment after moment regarding the Governor and his story where people might have those arguments on both sides. And I really want to hear those arguments. Not directly at me. I just want to overhear those arguments."
