Maybe David Morrissey wasn't just toying with us. The Governor died — a couple of times, it seemed — during The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 8 midseason finale, but David left the door open for his character's on-screen return.
As he put it last month, “I feel like a shady politician where I can't confirm and I can't deny anything. Certainly, bad things befell him at the end of the last episode but we just have to wait and see..." We figured he was just full of poop teasing, but a new Season 4, Episode 9 spoiler from TV Guide suggests The Gov. will show up again.
A reader asked for scoop on the Sunday, February 9 episode, which will launch the second half of the season. Here is TV Guide’s response:
"Don't expect to see too many familiar faces since Rick and Carl take center stage when the AMC drama returns. While Rick heals from his beating from The Governor — whom you will see again — Carl will lose something very important to him. (No, not his innocence!) In other news, it won't be long before this mystery is blown wide open."
The "this mystery" line included a link to an October TV Guide story where The Powers That Be teased more info coming on Michonne’s (Danai Gurira) past as a mother. "At the end of this season, you'll learn more about Michonne than all of Season 3," comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman said at the time. "That scene in Episode 2 with Michonne [and baby Judith] is the beginning of a very long story about her that will be told over the course of this season that is going to really open her character up. We're going to see what really makes her tick."
Nice. But back to The Governor. Maybe Michonne gives his head another slice, just for old time's sake? We know there's meant to be a flashback to Michonne's past this episode, but the hour is supposed to follow the comics, which means it will mostly follow Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), specifically Carl, as they take shelter after the prison battle. Hey, maybe there's another flashback showing The Governor? As in, like, a post-traumatic stress nightmare? No?
Anyway, what "very important" thing does Carl lose? Someone in the TV Guide comments quipped, "Please, God.Let the thing Carl loses be that stupid hat." It was a joke, but that may be exactly what happens. As another poster put it, "I like the hat, and it represents how much hero-worship he has for his dad." But if he loses the hat, that could be symbolic for his growing independence from his dad. Maybe he doesn't hero-worship Rick as much as he used to. We'll find out.
Any thoughts on what Carl loses and how we see The Governor again?
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
