The early reviews are shuffling in for The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 9, which premieres Sunday, February 9 on AMC.
We’ve been waiting two months for the second half of Season 4 to start, and it sounds like the first new hour of 2014 will focus on three characters: Michonne (Danai Gurira), Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), with the younger Grimes getting a pretty big post-prison showcase.
A fan asked E! News for scoop on the new season, and the response provided another mixed review of Episode 9:
“We just got done watching the midseason premiere and we're not going to lie, it's definitely not one of The Walking Dead's most exciting episodes. However, we are going to get a deeper peek into Michonne's pre-zombie life. We were shocked to see that before our stern-faced character became a sword-wielding killer, she was just a regular woman who smiled a lot. Living in a postapocalyptic world would definitely drain anyone of their happiness, but after learning more about her past, we're definitely more empathic with Michonne's cold exterior.”
Ah. Entertainment Weekly previously shared a brief review of Episode 9, giving it a “B” grade, and also mentioning a flashback. We initially thought it might be related to Rick being out of it again, but now maybe we’re thinking it’s the flashback to Michonne’s past we’ve been waiting for. We all remember that heartbreaking scene when Michonne held baby Judith and cried; the katana queen was a mother herself and maybe that’s what we’ll see in this episode. Or maybe we’ll just see the history of her zombie “pets” since an Episode 9 photo shows she has two new ones.
It’s good to hear Michonne will get a deeper character showcase, but that’s now two reviews warning us that this highly anticipated episode isn’t that exciting. As EW wrote in its review, “Inevitably, people start talking — and midway through its fourth season, Dead still has problems constructing an exciting scene with its pre-dead humans. (A flashback dream sequence is particularly leaden.)”
Hmm. Episode 9 is meant to be a very close adaptation from the comic books, and it was written by Robert Kirkman and directed by Greg Nicotero, so … we’re curious to see how we feel about it. It should be good, even if it isn’t action-packed. You don’t need constant action to make a good (or even great) episode! Maybe it’ll be something like the Season 4 premiere, which was on the quieter side (except for the Big Spot run) and mostly set up the action to come.
Are you disappointed to hear another review saying the episode isn’t that exciting, or are you now even more excited since we’ll get a taste of Michonne’s past? Head here for more details on what should happen in Episode 9.
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
